Mustique Charitable Trust provided grant funding for the furnishings to transform a room into a welcoming learning and activity centre, which now houses desks, chairs, white boards, fans, a bookshelf and a comfortable window box seating. The room will be used for remedial classes and creative activities for the boys staying at the Liberty Lodge Boys’ Training Centre.
The Centre is a residential care facility, which commenced its operations in 1969 and seeks to provide a caring environment in which boys 7 – 16 years old having familial, educational, social, emotional, and or behavioural difficulties can develop skills that would allow them to become responsible and productive citizens.
The facility is located on 10 acres of rich, farmland in Green Hill, St. Vincent and consists of a live-in dormitory, a woodwork shop, a kitchen and an administrative office. It can accommodate up to 40 boys and includes boys who are abused, neglected or abandoned by their parents or families as well as juveniles who are sent from various Courts. The Centre engages the boys in a variety of programmes inclusive of Life Skills, Counselling, Social Skills, Agriculture, Woodwork and Academics.
This project gave the boys an opportunity to participate and display their abilities since all the furniture and white boards were built by the boys under the training and supervision of the In-House Artisan Teacher at the Centre. The quality of the work was commendable for the boys and teenagers and our hope is that this project peaks the interest in those budding artisans who participated. At the same time, they now have a comfortable learning space that they helped create.
