14 Young Vincentians trained on Climate Change, Environment, Organic Gardening, Lifestyle Diseases and Local Herbs

14 Young Vincentians trained at the 14 day workshop

This was the sixth (6th) year of collaboration between the UK Friends of the Mustique Charitable Trust (UKFMCT) and Richmond Vale Academy (RVA). This programme was delayed from 2021 due to the severe impact on RVA facilities from the volcanic eruptions in April 2021.

14 Young Vincentians were selected for the fourteen-day workshop, where they were educated on the impact of climate change, environmental protection, organic gardening, lifestyle diseases. and local herbs.

The workshop included in-classroom theoretical training and practical hands on training at the RVA Climate Centre and Sustainable Farm along with major environmental site visits such as Jackhill Copeland Heritage Trail, Vermont Nature Trail, Botanical Gardens and Fort Charlotte.

The new area of focus in this year’s programme was “Lifestyle Diseases and Local Herbs and their benefits to the immune system”. This focus area was considered important after what the world experienced during COVID-19.

Participants also learnt how to design and create their own organic garden and were assigned in groups to understand teamwork.

At the end of the workshop, participants had a better understanding on how to maintain their health using herbs, which they can grow themselves in their backyard.

At the graduation ceremony, there were tears, as participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity and the bonds that were formed during the two-week summer camp.

This summer programme afforded 14 young Vincentians accommodation, meals, knowledge and lifelong memories of camaraderie for a total cost of US$16,753

St. Benedict Day Nursery & Children’s Home Online Home Schooling System Upgrade

Online Home Schooling System Upgrade

In December 2022, the Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) funded the upgrade of the Online Home Schooling System to replace the previous system funded in March 2020.

The previous computer system made a great difference at the Home especially during the subsequent COVID-19 period, it was used for online classes and online referral meetings with WPP doctors. Aside from this, the system was used mainly for at-home schooling for those children who are incapacitated and unable to attend public school, homework research, viewing movies and watching online church sermons.

The after school use of the computer and ABC Mouse programme was beneficial to two (2) students who passed their CPEA exam for secondary school. In addition, one of the boys who was 9 years at the time and unable to attend school due to health reasons, benefitted from the home schooling with the ABC Mouse programme. He was accepted to start school for the first time in September 2022 at the age of 12.

With the many uses and benefits of the home schooling system, the upgrade included a new computer, two additional larger monitors, high quality speakers, the ABC Mouse programme (ages 2-8) and the Adventure Academy programme (ages 8-13) which now benefits the children as they get older. The upgrade also ensured proper installation of internet cabling for reliable internet connection for the online schooling. The new system was ready for use at the end of January 2023.

The Mustique Charitable Trust was pleased to upgrade the Online Home Schooling System at St. Benedict Day Nursery & Children’s Home, which gives the children the opportunity to learn and explore new ideas.
