The Steel Pan is a musical instrument invented in the 20th Century and has been central in the Caribbean Culture and its Music Industry. It is a versatile instrument, which has been incorporated into a wide range of music genres.
The Music Charitable Trusts saw the opportunity of funding these Steel Pan Programmes as an alternative form of education for young Vincentians to learn about this Caribbean-based instrument
Over the years, the programmes keep the participating children and youngsters off the streets and provide a positive environment for learning and a much-needed extracurricular activity for these children and youths, whose families would otherwise not be able to afford this programme
All participants and members learn the art and skills of playing the steel pan, basic reading and writing of music and are engaged in capacity building activities and recreational tours.
For those with the aptitude, it is hoped that the programmes may capture these participants’ interest and lead to a form of employment
Since 2014, the Mustique Charitable Trusts has been funding Steel Pan Programmes and related initiatives
