Online Home Schooling System Upgrade

In December 2022, the Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) funded the upgrade of the Online Home Schooling System to replace the previous system funded in March 2020.

The previous computer system made a great difference at the Home especially during the subsequent COVID-19 period, it was used for online classes and online referral meetings with WPP doctors. Aside from this, the system was used mainly for at-home schooling for those children who are incapacitated and unable to attend public school, homework research, viewing movies and watching online church sermons.

The after school use of the computer and ABC Mouse programme was beneficial to two (2) students who passed their CPEA exam for secondary school. In addition, one of the boys who was 9 years at the time and unable to attend school due to health reasons, benefitted from the home schooling with the ABC Mouse programme. He was accepted to start school for the first time in September 2022 at the age of 12.

With the many uses and benefits of the home schooling system, the upgrade included a new computer, two additional larger monitors, high quality speakers, the ABC Mouse programme (ages 2-8) and the Adventure Academy programme (ages 8-13) which now benefits the children as they get older. The upgrade also ensured proper installation of internet cabling for reliable internet connection for the online schooling. The new system was ready for use at the end of January 2023.

The Mustique Charitable Trust was pleased to upgrade the Online Home Schooling System at St. Benedict Day Nursery & Children’s Home, which gives the children the opportunity to learn and explore new ideas.

This is the 14th disbursement of bursaries awarded under this Programme, which was initiated back in 2010, between Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) and the University of West Indies Open Campus (UWIOC) in St Vincent.

Each year the Programme awards at least three (3) bursaries to community-oriented candidates who needs financial assistance and after the assessment process and interviews, the three (3) selected candidates for the 2022/2023 MCT UWIOC Bursaries are:

  • Kelroy Richardson (Male) – Bachelor of Science: Youth Development Work
  • Sylvorn Harry (Female) – Bachelor of Science: Human Resource Management
  • Yonnick Samuel (Male) – Bachelor of Science: Human Resource Management

These three (3) candidates now join the Mustique Charitable Trust Bursary Programme, which has awarded 41 Bursaries since its inception in 2010 and has seen 22 graduated awardees who have received 10 First Class Degrees, 5 Upper Second Degree, 6 Lower Second Degrees and 1 Certificate. Many of these graduates are now giving back to the society through their careers in teaching, counselling and social work which speaks in itself of the sustainability of this successful and beneficial collaboration between MCT and UWIOC

Kelroy Richardson - Bachelor of Science: Youth Development Work

Kelroy Richardson is certified in Teacher Education and Technology and currently teaches at Troumaca Secondary School. He is involved with a number of extracurricular activities and community work. He is a peer counsellor and a member of the Police Youth Club and sees his degree as deepening his ability to help the youth in both his school community (Troumaca) and his home community of Barrouallie.

Sylvorn Harry - Bachelor of Science: Human Resource Management

Sylvorn Harry, a former Cadet, is now a Police Constable in the Royal St Vincent & the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF). She is very community-oriented, involved in extracurricular activities at Secondary Schools and a member of the NGO Red Root, which assists unemployed women who are victims of sexual and other forms of abuse. She was assigned to the Welfare Division in the RSVGPF where she has gathered a keen understanding of Human Resources Management and has identified the need in her organisation.

Yonnick Samuel - Bachelor of Science: Human Resource Management

Yonnick Samuel is currently employed at a small local bank, First St. Vincent Bank, as a Loans Clerk and grew up in a single parent home. Nonetheless, he displays a strong sense of responsibility for his family and is the main breadwinner for his mother and younger siblings. He resides in a high crime area, which is marginalised by society and is considered a role model and provides mentorship for the other young men in the area. He selected Human Resources Management with hopes to better serve at his workplace and in his mentorship in his community.

The Salvation Army Children’s Home 2021-22 Grant Programme

In January 2021, UK Friends of the MCT approved a grant for funding to the Salvation Army Children’s Home, which provided:

Three (3) dining sets to seat up to 18 persons
One (1) small-sized dining set to seat up to six (6) toddlers
Two (2) large tables, chairs and white board for a classroom area
Monthly Grocery Allowance
Stipend Contribution for two (2) House Mothers
Kitchen cookware, utensils and children-safe dinnerware

All furniture was built by a small business carpenter who welcome the income provided by this project.

La Soufrière Volcano erupted shortly after and delayed the project somewhat. Nonetheless, the project was fully completed in May 2022 and the Home is now outfitted with much needed furniture and kitchen necessity which will used at the Home for years to come.

It was indeed heartening to work together with the Salvation Army and the Carpenter and see the fruition of this Grant, which contributes towards the comfort, health, education and well-being of these children.

It is hoped that this assistance will afford these children, who already face unfortunate circumstances, the love and care deserving of every child.

Distribution in the Red and Orange Zones

In May 2021, the set-up of a Distribution Centre and Distribution Team saw the Mustique Charitable Trust office managing and executing the distribution of relief supplies. Our Team and trucks went into the Red and Orange Zones where we would distribute directly to the impacted villagers who were most in need. Our direct distribution lasted for nine (9) months from May 2021 to January 2022, reached over 14,000 villagers in 28 Villages.

Distribution Comes to an End

Distribution ended after nine (9) unforgettable months. It was indeed a challenging but very enlightening experience for all the Distribution Team Members who were with us on the ground. During that time, the Mustique VERF Distribution Team became a part of the communities in the Red and Orange Zones

We all have emotional memories and though it was hard at times, we all gave it our best for the benefit of those children, farmers and villagers that we saw in unfortunate circumstances.

It was a life-changing experience and all that was witnessed will constantly remain in our thoughts as we continue our objectives to help those most in need.
