UWI Bursary Awards 2021

Mustique Charitable Trust awards Three (3) Bursaries for 2021-2022 Academic Year at the University of West Indies Open Campus
In the year that St. Vincent & the Grenadines was grappling with the effects of the La Soufrière eruptions, it was even more so important that The Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) awarded its bursaries at the University of the West Indies Open Campus (UWIOC) for the 2021-2022 Academic Year.
The selection was even more meaningful this year since two (2) of the following three (3) selected awardees come from the Red and Orange Zones of St. Vincent and as such, were impacted by the eruption:
- Tevin Bynoe – Bachelor of Science: Accounting
- Kerlisa DaSilva – Bachelor of Science: Psychology
- Jozel Lewis – Bachelor of Science: Banking & Finance (Special)
This marks the 13th disbursement of bursaries for our Bursary Programme during which time 38 Bursaries have been awarded. The success of the Programme is reflected in the performance of the 22 graduated awardees who have received 10 First Class Degrees, 5 Upper Second Degree, 6 Lower Second Degrees and 1 Certificate. Many of these graduates are now giving back to the society through their careers in teaching, counselling and social work.
The MCT Bursary covers 60% of the Academic Fees and provides a laptop to the Awardees for their online classes.

Tevin Bynoe - Bachelor of Science: Accounting
Tevin comes from the small island of Bequia and can be considered an inspiration for other young men facing challenges in their life. Having lost his father when he was 4 months old, Tevin witnessed the struggles his mother endured to take care of her family due to her minimal formal education. His personal life experiences strengthened his resolve to obtain a University education. His dream is to be a Lawyer and hopes that his degree in Accounting will provide the required matriculation to subsequently pursue that dream. So although there are obstacles and it may seem impossible, Tevin and his tenacity has found a way.

Jozel Lewis - Bachelor of Science: Banking & Finance (Special)
Jozel is single mother with a teenage son, hopes for a better life for them both. Her original home is located in the Orange Zone but she relocated in the interest of her son’s studies and her job. Her mother is a small farmer located in the Red Zone and Jozel assist her mother with the farming to supplement her income. She coordinates community cleanups and is involved with a neighbourhood support group for single mothers.

Kerlisa DaSilva - Bachelor of Science: Psychology
Kerlisa comes from the Red Zone and was impacted by the eruptions. At the time of her interview, she and her family were displaced and trying to repair their home. Kerlisa is a dedicated teacher who loves her job and her students and is a founding member of the Georgetown Festival Arts Committee. Her choice of study stems from her personal observation of the emotional and psychological needs of her students. She hopes her studies will make her a better-equipped teacher and later counsellor for the students and children of her community
