We visited Junior Sailing Academy Bequia (JSAB) in February of 2020 and saw that the seven (7) Laser Picos donated by the Mustique Charitable Trust MCT in 2018 were been maintained in good condition. JSAB Committee continued to be very committed to make this programme a success and indicated the need for larger boats in their fleet.
With this in mind, the UK Friends of the Mustique Charitable Trust (UKFMCT) approved a grant in October 2020 for JSAB to purchase and refurbish a second-hand 18’ Double Ender Boat.
In March 2021, the boat was fully refurbished and ready for the JSAB members to take her out on the water. COVID-19 restrictions delayed the start of training but JSAB was able to resume their sessions subsequently.
The 18’ Double Ender Boat has increased training sessions for the older progressing members, ages 14-21 years, to prepare for the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Assessment and Certification, which can lead to yacht masters certification. This certification increases the employability of these youths in the yachting and sailing industry.
JSAB programme goes beyond the teaching of sailing skills for enjoyment and racing. For those with the interest and aptitude, there is a pathway to certification and employment in the yachting and sailing industry through Bequia based yachting businesses and those in the region.
In addition, the 18’ Double Ender Boat is a wooden fishery boat, which enables members to learn more skills and lead to employment opportunities in the fishery industry.
UKFMCT was very pleased to issue a Grant for US$11,160 to assist JSAB to purchase this 18’ Double Ender Boat, which in turn provides alternative skills training and opportunities of alternative employment for the livelihood of JSAB members
