16 Young Adults graduated from Permaculture Design Course with Certification in Ecological and Sustainable Farming

The UK Friends of the Mustique Charitable Trust funded a twelve-day Permaculture Design Course which enabled 16 participants to be trained in the concept of permaculture and designing gardens utilising this concept.

Permaculture is an approach to agricultural design that focuses on whole systems thinking, as well as using or simulating patterns from nature. It gives farmers a way to achieve high yields and productivity while doing it in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way than conventional farming methods. It applies a more holistic approach to farming crops or livestock by using principles in regenerative agriculture such as topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity and improving the water cycle, restoring and protecting natural processes and the use of available resources to recover from adverse situations.

The Permaculture Design Course, which was facilitated by the Richmond Vale Academy, trained the participants to grow most of their own healthy food in a sustainable and even profitable way whilst being in harmony with the environment. It equipped them with the necessary knowledge to not only maintain their own sustainable gardens but also enable them to design gardens for other gardeners to implement the permaculture concept.

On Thursday 17th September 2020, 16 participants successfully graduated from the course and received their Permaculture Design Certificate. This certificate is awarded to students who complete the 72-hour Curriculum in Permaculture Design and is internationally recognized. It is hoped that the newly certified Permaculture Designers will utilise their newly acquired knowledge to sustain themselves, the environment and their communities.

With the training and knowledge gained from the Permaculture Design Course, Junior will now be able to assist with the capacity building and education of other members of The Hub Collective and the wider community of Bequia.
