Disaster Management Education
The Trust have taken a proactive approach to disasters and are introducing education programmes to mitigate the effects of hurricanes and floods. A recently completed successful three week project run by Richmond Vale Academy (RVA) at their facility in the north of St Vincent, gave first hand experience of the realities and challenges of coping with the effects of disasters and climate change. Ten students and two teachers from the David Ross Academy in England and members of a rural Vincentian environmental youth group took part in a variety of MCT funded activities which included tree planting to prevent beach erosion, a beach clean up, hiking the volcano and visits to Mustique and Union Island to experience fully the biodiversity of St Vincent and the Grenadines.
As important as the environmental education taking place was the cultural exchange among the students. Friendships were formed and new skills were learned including drumming and steel pan playing. The Trusts thank The David Ross Education for enabling some of their students to attend this unique environmental experience. High praise to RVA for its successful management of this project.
